It seems that Muscadine grapes were in Florida when the Spanish arrived in 1510 or so. They cultivated them and made wine.

The grapes most people are accustomed to on the table or in wine are native to the area around the Caucuses and parts of Iran. American does have some native grape varieties but they have not been very successful for these uses.

Most grapes are now grafted old world varieties in new world root stock because of Phyloxera
