Question: I was just wondering...why are some alcoholic beverages called spirits? I don't drink, but I have always been a little curious about this.

Beer is beer, wine is wine. Spirits pretty much refers to all those alcohols that aren't beer or wine. I'm not sure what makes people use the term, I've never thought about it. The other most often used term other then spirits is "hard alcohol". They both refer to alcohols that have been distilled.

I think it is just a category to define mix drinks, because beer and wine is pretty self explanatory

spirit means one of the catogory alcholic beverage. do you know why beers and wine is not spirit? but some others they called spirit.. for example brandy..
brandy is based from wine and the brandy they called spirit but wine is not spirit. it because the wine must to be distillation process to become brandy.. its mean, after process distillation they called spirit.. it also same to vodka, rum and gin.. and now you must be understand why they called spirit.
