Beer brewing Q?!

Question: I'm trying to brew a strong belgiun ale, and the directions say....."add one pack of bittering hops boiling for 30 minutes. add second pack of bittering hops boiling for an additional 30 minutes."

now, does this mean to add the first pack at the beginning of the boil, or after 30 minutes of boiling?

thanks!

1, bring your wort to a boil
2. add first hops
3. boil for 30 minutes
4. add second hops
5. boil 30 more minutes

make sense?

Boil the brew, and the hops and continue boiling for 30 mins, then add second pack and boil for another 30 mins....that's how I read it.

Yep, add the bittering hops when you first start boiling. After 30 minutes, add the second bag of hops and boil for another 30 minutes. Total boil time, 60 minutes.

Hop scheduling, depending on how many hop additions you have, usually go something like 90-60 minutes for bittering hops, 30-15 for flavoring hops, and 5-0minutes for aroma hops.

Certain hop characters will either boil out of the beer, or remain behind as bitterness. The longer you boil, the more bitterness you will have from the hop, the shorter the boil, or no boil at all, the more aroma you'll have. That is a really simplistic way to look at hop scheduling, since the rules and science can get quite complicated and long winded quick.

Good luck brewing!
