Can scotch (Laphroig) skunk or go bad? Was it contaminated? It tasted like formaldehyde.?!
He poured some into a fresh glass but it tasted the same. Even after having a glass of Jack Daniel's and brushing my teeth I still taste it.
Can Scotch go bad? Has anyone ever had this experience?
Answers: I just asked for a glass of Laphroig at a bar in London. It tasted terrible - like formaldehyde or at least rubber. It was awful. I asked the barman to taste it; he would not but said it smelled OK. (It did not smell right but it did not smell as bad as it tasted.)

Ooooh. Yuck. It was probably contaminated with God knows what. Scotch cannot go bad.
In the first place, how do you know what formaldehyde tastes like?

i know i once left some beer in a bottle and stowed it away in my closet for some time and it eventually tasted like liquor. another time i left some in a plastic bottle for only two days and by then it smelled of wine...extra-fermentation?
whisky doesn't tend to go off, apart from ones in ceramic bottles(they breath)
sounds as if the bottle has been mixed,
laphroig is, from memory, quite a strong pungent seaweedy taste, not my favourite!
report the establishment to the local licensing board, they might not do anything this time but they'll have it documented and if enough complains about bad drink being sold then a visit should be due.
I had an open bottle of Laphroig that slowly got emptied over the course of a few years, and I never got any formadehyde taste or smell. Old gym socks, yes... formadehyde, no.
Methinks that bar owner was probably stretching his liquor on-the-sly.
.
That's just the particular flavor of Laphroaig...it's not for everybody.
