Goldschlager is a cinnamon schnapps, I've never mixed it with anything, its kind of a novelty shot alcohol, and yes the gold is edible. As to why people get sick from it, maybe they had too much, or mixed it with other booze...
It's a clear liquor and it has a Cinnamon taste to it. Most people chill it in the freezer and drink shots. But be warned it can only make you sick if you drink too much. It is one of my favorites. And no the gold flecks can not hurt you other wise it wouldn't be in the bottle.
Bebe is correct it is a Cinnamon schnapps.. It is safe to drink the gold, the actual reason the gold flakes are in it is because they put tiny cuts inside you so the alcohol gets into your blood stream faster. I have never really heard about people getting sick off of it, only if they drink too much. It's pretty good though, try it out.
Goldshlager is a cinnimon liquor it is drunk in shots, you can mix it with frangelico and half and half to make a drink called an oatmeal cookie. the gold is safe to drink the reason the gold is in there is because back in the midevil times and this drink dates back to then is people thought if they ingested the gold it woulds cure all that was wrong.
People get sick because they drink too much, drinking too much of anything will make you sick.
