Is it just me, or do other people miss opening bottles of wine with real corks?!

Question: Opening a bottle of win is so much more then drinking its contents. I'm not going to get all snobby, but I really miss getting a corkscrew opener and opening a bottle of wine the traditional way. This ritual is somthing I increasingly miss, due to these darn screw-top wines. Its like your opening a bottle of cola or ginger ale! Wine is so much more. A bottle of wine should have a cork. What are your opinions?

As much as we will miss the romance of the perfect corkscrew opening (it is very impressive at a restaurant or at home) the fact of the matter is that with a cork seal between 10-20 % of all wine is off (to a certain degree).
Imagine if you were in any other business and you had that kind of failure rate. You would change something or be out of business pretty quick !

Most wine companies are introducing their higher end wines with twist off and then working the way down (because of some peoples perception of screwcap means cheap)

So at the end of the day , some of the romance is gone but you are getting to try the wine just as the wine maker has meant it to taste

Not really - cos I always manage to bugger up pulling out the cork and then have bits floating in the wine all night.

So annoying.

So, it's Blue Nun and Black Tower for me.

I totally agree..................!

Unless of course you buy a bottle that needs a corkscrew and you are somewhere that you don't have one! Which has happened to me!

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Having been in the upscale restaurant business for over seven years, I love being able to expertly cork a wine bottle with a wine key. It's a skill that not many people have, so I am sure they appreciate the twist tops. But doing it yourself is so much more fun!

Also - there are many bottles of wine that are very expensive and have gone the way of screw tops, not just the cheap ones. My friend who is a sommelier at the Scotsdale Marriott says that more and more of the bottles over $100 are coming that way. Signs of the future I guess. =(

well stop buting cheap bottles of wine then lol most wines still have corks and yes its much more exciting when u pop ur cork lol

no I dont mind the new tops, quicker ;0)

Yes I have a lovely cork care kit in my drawer that rarely get's used too. they do still have the ones with the cork you just have to look. I too have noticed there is quite a few now that don't have them.-----"sigh"

AMEN brother.

its not just you , i miss opening bottles of wine with real corks its the business .

I agree there is a certain aesthetic here...almost romantic...but it has been shown in last couple years to be fool proof in keeping the contents safe from the effects of leaking and oxidizing. I just hate it when something goes wrong and the darn thing crumbles in my wine. That is a bummer, to deal with straining it.

Miss it, but as I make my wine, I look forward to trying the new screw caps. But there is an advantage in making it, I can use corks as long as they sell them!

Cheaper wines don't typically have the cork but more expensive do. I like the cork myself but I am a freak and like to keep them in some cool containers in my kitchen

Well...it depends! If I'm the one drinking it then yeah...I normally pick corkscrew bottles, but if your job involves opening bottle after bottle then, thank god for whoever decided to change it to screw-top!

There is something or some noise missing from opening
wine with a plastic cork, but in the long run i recon its better.

I totally agree unless im tipsy and cant find the corkscrew!! or at someones house that doesnt drink wine and doesnt own a corkscrew! lol
