Alcohol effect - does it wear off over time?!

Question:

Alcohol effect - does it wear off over time?

I've been drinking since I was 17 roughly. Although I didn't start drinking properly until I was about 19.
I can recall it having a very nice effect on me, giving like a mild euphoria up until I was about the age of 23.
Since then, and certainly since the age of 25, I've noticed its effects wane.
I'm now 28 and over the last few months, I can honestly say, that it has no effect on me whatsoever.
I get no happy feeling, just slightly less inhibited and some drowsiness.

Has anyone else noticed this with age? It's got to the point now where I just drink soft drinks when I go out...

Answers:
You are right about the effects wearing off as one ages.

It is because over the years, the body becomes used to having alcohol in it and it has adjusted itself to it.

I am 75 and still enjoy drinking beer very much and constantly keep about 19 different brands and kinds of beer in my refrigerator at all times to satisfy my thirst for the stuff and only drink two - three beers every other day with my meals.

As with any other 'drug', you develop a tolerance with continual use. It takes more and more to reach that initial point of euphoria. That's the reason you usually find more bars than churches in most places.

I think when we are teens we want whatever we are not supposed to have. Alcohol is one restriction so naturally, teens do what they can to have it. As we mature we lose that desire to have it because we've had a taste of it and the challenge is gone. In addition, we get wiser and don't enjoy the "wasted" feeling any longer.

Your body builds a tolerance to alcohol, so it takes more to get that "feeling" like you used to. But I think it has more to do with the feeling coming from freedom. When you are a kid, and it is illegal to drink, you feel like you are getting away with something. And your showing the world how big you are. When you grow up and realize that nobody cares if you drink or not, a couple of beers makes you tired instead of rebellious. I used to drink a lot, but as I have gotten older, I have slowed down because of family responsibilities and also because a hang-over I would have never noticed before just about puts me out of commission for a week now...
