Scotch is aged in barrels that have been previously used for other liquors. Usually it is Bourbon, but recently we have seen Sherry and port casks used as well as new French oak. The flavors in the wood flavor the Scotch. Some distilleries float their barrels on rafts and the waves slosh the Scotch, thus aging it quicker. Like the other answers, there is no benefit to aging in glass.

Scotch is aged in oak barrels, Once it is bottled the flavor enhancing process is stopped.

It's aged in barrels. There's no value add to it being in a glass bottle.

A scotch that says 2007 and aged 12 years on it means it was put in barrels after distilling in 1995, and taken out of the barrels in '07, put in glass and shipped out.

It will taste the same in 2047 as it does today.
