It doesn't matter mentally how mature a person is that determines if someone is an adult. Being an adult is about how old you are, not mental maturity. Even if you've got a 22 year old acting like a 12 year old, he's still an adult by age. Just because an 8 year old has the mental capacity of a 30 year old doesn't mean it should be alright for that 8 year old to drink because their body is still developing and alcohol would be very harmful.

The same goes for a 16 year old, even with mental maturity, a 16 year old more that likely doesn't have any experience with alcohol (shouldn't anyhow) and more than likely would drink beyond their own limit just because their peers at a party kept drinking beer after beer, shot after shot. Even a 16 year old is still developing physicially. Also, I'm not sure about you, but I've never seen a 16 year old that only drank a beer for its taste or one who drank in moderation.

Now I'm not saying the 21 age minimum for alcohol consumption is right on the money, but it is a decent age at which most "kids" have enough experience in life to know to drink in moderation or have the reasoning skills to know when would be alright to drink till you can't walk or even sit straight.

Yes, it should also be required to have a baby and voting.
