Growing flowers next to vineyards?!

Question: I moved house a few weeks ago, and now i live near alot of vineyards. I've noticed it doesn't matter which one i go past, every single row of grape vines have a rose bush planted at the end. For the life of me i couldn't have guess what it was for. My fiance guessed, and said that perhaps they all represent the different grapes. As there are red, pink, white and yellow roses planted.

Is this what they are planted for, to label the different grapes?

Thanks :)

I was once a transplant to vineyard country and asked the same question... a local vintner told me they are to make sure the rows are getting proper water, nutrients, etc. because roses & grape vines thrive in similar conditions and are suceptible to similar diseases & pests. Thay way, as they go past the row they can tell right away that if the roses are doing well, the grapes are likely, too. It has also become tradition.

Welcome to Wine Country!!!

The land in which the grapes grow is significant to the flavor. Watch French Kiss (Meg Ryan & Kevin Kline -- there is a short tutorial in the movie -- and it is a delightful change of pace. It's about 10+ years old now.

I like your answer about the different types of grapes -- it sounds clever and romantic! But is probably is to keep the correct water for the rows.

Definitely get to know your neighbors!
