Answers: What do they mean by spirits?

Beer:
Produced by the fermentation of sugars derived from starch (i.e. barley, wheat, rice etc).
Generally (in Britain) around the 3-5% mark, many continental beers can be in excess of 10% ABV.

Wine:
Produced by the fermentation of grape juice. Generally range between 10% and 20% ABV.

drunk ghosts.

Spirits is a term generally applied to distilled liquors. The term comes from the fact that when you distill something, you remove the 'spirit' (small amount of alcohol) from the 'body' (bulk) of the mash (or other fermented fluid).

Shorts. The strength of a drink is ever so much stronger when it is in spirit form or a short like whiskey, bacadi, vodka, rum etc they are strong spirits.

While the previous answers may be true... I like to believe it's because even the thought of alcohol is sometimes enough to lift one's spirit.
