Cohiba Siglo IV are excellent, and so are the rest of the Siglo series. Montecristos are also a favorite of mine. If you are in the US, though, you cant get the Cubans. Try to find out what type of cigar he likes as far as flavor and strength. Then you can go to a cigar store and get an idea of what to buy. You dont need to spend a lot of money on a great cigar, I have smoked plenty that are under $8. Other brands and lines to consider other than Cubans: Rocky Patel, Perdomo, Onyx Reserve Maduro, Gurkha, Avo, Arturo Feunte, Padron, Puros Indios, and CAO.
Cohiba is the best in my opinion but are very expensive. I would suggest a good Dominican or Honduran if you cannot get Cuban cigars. Royal Jamaica or Macanudo are fine cigars for the money...they are not inexpensive either but not as expensive as a Cohiba.
Romeo y Julieta, or Antony y Cleopatra. They are both Havana cigars.
If you are buying these cigars in the US, I would avoid trying to find Cuban cigars. You will most likely pay too much and the chances they will actually be counterfeit is high. The world's very best cigars may indeed be Cuban but that doesn't mean the worst Cuban cigars are better than anything else you can find.
Try to find out what cigars your boyfriend has enjoyed and head to a cigar shop with that list. They can get you some of those or suggest others he may like based on his tastes.
The very best cigar I've had is a Fuente Fuente Opus X. They can be pricey, and hard to find but have been called the best non-Cuban cigar by more than one reviewer.
A bit less money be still very good are cigars by Auturo Fuente (Hemingway is my favorite), or Puros Indios, or CAO. Now that the cigar fad has somewhat faded the prices for very good cigars have become reasonable again.
Good luck, you might find a mild cigar you enjoy too.
Cubans are the best, only if youare getting a true Cuban...and since they cannot be imported legally, your chances of getting a true Cuban are pretty slim. I have always enjoyed Macanudo's and Cohiba's. If you are not certain of his taste, perhaps you should present him with a gift certificate to your local humidor and the two of you can go elarn about cigars and determine what he likes. You could also give him a cutter, a punch (it punches a hole in the cigar, rather than cutting it), lighter or even a small humidor. that way he has the accessories and he can get the cigars he likes. I did that for my fiancee because I wasn't sue what he liked, so I just got him all the accessories.
I agree with most people here. True cubans are fantastic but illegal in the U.S. Some of my favorites are Opus X but are expensive, on a more reasonable note I like Astral Talanga Valley Selection. Just ask indirectly what is his favorite cigar, or have a friend ask him what cigar he would love to have but doesn't have some like that. Good luck. It would be a great surprise.
If you want to avoid possible Customs confiscating the box when it is there, you might want to get Dominican or Nicaraguan Cigars. Top of the line Dominican cigars are Fuente Fuente Opus X, Arturo Fuente Anejo, Ashton Virgin Sun Grown. Top of the line Nicaraguan cigars are Padron Anniversario 1964, Padron Anniversario 1926 and Tatuaje cigars.
Opus X and Anejo cigars are very expensive to find online, as with the other cigars mentioned, the can be found, but you need to be selective otherwise you will be taken to the cleaners.
Contrary to popular belief, Cuban cigars haven't been "the best" for decades. Those made in the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua are far superior.
