I don't know how they're done today but it used to be: In an old-fashioned glass, sprinkle a lump of sugar with bitters, add a twist of lemon, fill with whiskey, garnish with a maraschino cherry. You wouldn't want to have too many of those!

In the original you put a sugar cube in a glass, put in bitters mash it up then add whiskey. Now you put in the whiskey, bitters and simple bar syrup top with mixer.
