Like many people have said before, you don't have to spend crazy amounts of money to get a nice bottle of wine. But for around 30, here are some choices:

-Stag's Leap Cabernet Sauvignon. A very nice vineyard, with great flavor and quite rich. A favorite amongst people in my store.

-Caymus Conundrum (if he likes white's). Caymus is an awesome vineyard, anyone who knows has heard of them, especially there 2002 Special Selection Cab's (run around $120).

-Ruffino Gold Chianti (if he love dry wines, this is a magnificent bottle).

-Or to really get something nice, try a nice bottle of Barolo or Amarone. This are two excellent Italian wines (and he would love them if he's Italian).

-Another good type of wine is Bordeauxs (a good one is Chateau Picque). They are from the French region, very popular.

Goodluck!

There are several good bottles of wine that you can get for between $20 - $30.

Check out this site www.winestead.com. There is a lot of good information and you can even email the webmaster and ask for suggestions.

Availablility of wine will depend on where you live.

I love Chilean wines.
They are very good and inexpensive!

You can buy two bottles!

oh darling ... there are so many fabulous wines under 10.00! in fact, i don't usually spend more than 7.99 a bottle (and most are like 4.99 & 5.99) at Trader Joe's and they're sooo tasty! if you have one near you, find out when they have wine tastings (usually on fridays) & ask what they recommend as all stores carry different wines depending on what state you're in.

Grab a bottle of Clo DE bois (sp) or some chateau st. Michelle both are around 10 to 15 dollars and are great wines. comparable with some of the big names. and it will save you enough for a card and cake. He will love it. If you are looking for a collector bottle try a super target or a wine store they usually have 20$ bottle's with a description so you know exactly what your getting. in fact a wine store might even let you taste. If you really want to get adventurous take him to your local winery (there is usually one in every town or state) and let him taste away. most times for free! just do a yahoo search in your local community and see what you get. have fun!

Girl, there are so many great wines for under $20.00. Don't let the Napa wine snobs fool you into thinking you have to spend $20, $30, or more for a 'good' wine.

I just bought a Behringers old-vine zinfadel 2005, for 7.99 and it was one of the best I've had in a long time -- a great change from the Merlots we'd been drinking.

I would try and stick with something 'local' though (like the Behringers), because your stores will stock more of the stuff produced nearby.

.

Wine is sometimes cheaper than Coke or 7Up....
For French wine (red) for under 20 bucks, go to Trader Joe's and get "COTE DU RHONE"
If you like Italian wine: VALPOLICCELA (better than Chianti)

Since I don't know where you live, if there is no Trader Joe's, hopefully there is a Whole Food, they also do have nice selection, but more expensive.

Pair your wine choice with his favorite food for a birthday dinner. As a Californian, you have a zillion good wines produced right at home. One name I'd throw at you is Francis Ford Coppola. His wines are as good as his films. Just a thought, for your price range.
