I'm not 100% on the exact year, but twist-off caps were invented in the early 1960's... again, I'm not sure exactly what year.
The aluminum beer can was invented by Coors in 1958.
A new and improved pop-top can was revealed in 1963.
I would venture to say the two came out roughly the same year.

I think around the late 60's it started being "twist top". I remember my old man saying when he was a kid it was all pop top stuff. He was born in 55 so yeah. Hope that helps.
