Guinness and Cider?!


Question: Went to R.T.O'sullivan's with a buddy o-mine the other day and he gave me a couple swigs of his beer...I want to know what this was...Was it regular cider or hard cider? I think it was regular...I don't know the name tho.

BTW: It tasted pretty f'n good...but thats cause it was layered im assuming...NOT mixed

It was hard cider, which is basically an alcoholic version of the stuff you get from the cider mill in the fall.
The most readily available brands in the States are Woodchuck (5 varieties), Strongbow (imported from Eng.), Woodpecker, Hardcore, and Magners (imported from Eng.).
Chances are it was probably Woodchuck Amber or Strongbow.
This drink (half-stout, half-cider, layered) is called a Poor Man's Black Velvet, or sometimes a Black Apple or Chocolate Apple.
It's often mistakenly referred to as a Snakebite (which is actually half cider and half lager - the lager usually being Harp), or sometimes just as a Black Velvet (which is half stout and half Champagne or sparkling wine, as stated above).
It's a damn tasty drink, and the great thing about cider is that it is delicious on its own, or can be mixed in a multitude of ways.

if it was hard cider then its called a black velvet.

If it was layered, it could've been :

Black & Tan (Guiness & a pale ale, usually Bass or Smithwick's).

A Black Velvet is typically Sparkling wine/champagne layered with Guiness.

Guinness, is right on.
