unfortunately you are going to get a million answers from everybody. nobody will give the same answer. the best rule of thumb wiht any wine, taste it, if you like it it is good.

for V-Day I like a nice malbec from argentina. goes great with chocolate. a very nice rich red wine that can stand up to steak or something hearty.

christmas is a tough call, most of the time my family has chardonnay for white and sangiovese, cab, or zin for red, depending on what we are having.

summer I tend to drink red zinfandel and sauvingon blanc.
new years, j. schram bubbly from schramsberg.

I don't really have any real thought process to what I drink at what time, etc. what ever suites my fancy.

Man oh man. Would you ask the same question about beer? What about soda? Potato chips? Wine has this weird mystique about it, people like to think if it's pricey, it must be good, so they tolerate it. Don't fall into this wannabe highbrow pit, doing so will make you very lowbrow. Drink what you like, go to a wine bar, tell them what you like and have them pour for you a flight (a bunch of samples), write down what you like, go buy it. If people mock your decision, explain why you like it, talk about its texture, aftertaste, smoothness, etc. I'll bet you'll shut them up right away.

Taste it and if you like it, then it must be good. A good wine will cost you a bit more in price, cheap plonk will still only be cheap plonk.

very simple
taste it. yaar
