Try a Louis Jadot Beaujolais,Or a Dubouf Beaujolais you don't have to spend $30 Bucks to get a nice wine....
Look for Burgundies from larger areas such as Cote de Beaune, or Cote de Nuits, or just Bourgogne. Joseph Drouhin is always a good call. From Bordeaux, look for wines from St. Emilion, as they are Merlot based, and usually don't cost as much as wines from the Medoc...
A GOOD French red wine is a myth in the wine industry. They ruined all their soil and vineyards years ago and only keep surviving on their old reputation and high costs. Because in the wine industry, if its really expensive, then it must be good. France hasn't had a good vintage for many, many, many years. You're better off going with a Spanish or Italian wine.
