Is the beer gut reality or is it just because of the extra calories?!

Question: It's just because of the calories.

Answers: It's just because of the calories.

Yes, it's the calories.

So it is something in the beer that causes it.

The beer gut is caused by fatty tissue that lines the abdominal cavity in front of your stomach and other organs. This is one of the places that calories from alcohol is stored, and since this this "skirt" of fat across the front of your abdomen is right in front, it shows the most, thus giving you the appearance of having a beer gut.
