Buying alcohol?!
Buying alcohol?
Me and my partner are both over 18, we went to the local supermarket to purchase alcohol. We were told we both needed to show ID. The store told us it was the law, that all persons show ID when purchasing alcohol. Does anyone know where i can find this law.

they said it was store policy. I understand if the person buying needs to show ID but not everyone else that is with them. I did ask to see the policy but they just kept passing us on to different members of staff and we never got to see the policy. they just kept saying it was the law.

This would be based on uk laws.

this is a uk situation. In the uk you only have to be 18 to buy alcohol. It is usual that only the person buying has to show ID. I wanted to know about where i can find info on the laws regarding this.

it is the law...you both have to be over 21...who ever is with you at the time you purchase the alcohol will also be carded...
it's usually posted...I'm alot older and STILL get carded..for cigs too!
I don't think there is that kind of law.
However, each establishment can set it's own rules for how they determine who's "of age" But it should be posted. I once went to a concert where they had a sign that they card everyone who looks like they are under 30---and the drinking age is 21!
I believe you have to be 21yo to buy "Alcohol" so wouldn't know about that law... sorry!!
i worked at a grocery store that sold alcohol in massachusetts, and if someone looked under the age of 30- they needed to be carded. if they had a companion that also looked under 30, they needed to be carded too. If one of them was over 21 but the other was under-age, i wasn't allowed to sell it to them. just wanted to show you that it's legit
If you go to Elk grove ill they have law that every buying alcohol must show a id no mater what your age is
It is probably not law that the store must card, rather it would be the law that the store would have no defence from prosecution if an underager purchases hooch and it is learned the store did not check an official ID with age shown.
I regret all the Answerers who stated the age is 21. It is true that there are so many self-absorbed, arrogant, not thinking Americans out here - especially in this and the Food category - who totally ignore that Yahoo Answers English has participants in all the English speaking countries designated by the flags below (and many in the non-English speaking countries as well).
