Does Red Wine Spoil Once Opened?!

Question: Hey,

I was wondering something- does red wine go bad once it's opened and left UNrefrigerated ?

I'm not talking about if it will taste bad, but will it spoil or in any way become unhealthy to drink if it's left out for several weeks.

I opened a bottle of red wine about 3 weeks ago and I put the cork back in and without thinking, I put it in the pantry instead of the refrigerator....will it still be ok to drink, or would it be best/safest to just dump it ?

Thanks for any help!

Probably after awhile it'll taste funny, but I would think that the alcohol in it would keep any organisms at bay....after all, that why there used to be a lot of wine back in Bible times....it was safer to store & drink than grape juice or water.

If it's not an expensive brand, I'd say just dump it...it may not be the best anymore.

Have a blessed evening :-)

you will live. It may have fermented and may be more bitter but if you had the corkon you should be good.

I wouldn't drink it, See it and if it smells strange toss it....

You want to drink red wine within 24 hours of opening the bottle

It tastes bad way before it will hurt you. Look, if it taste like crap why would you drink it anyhow? You can get a bottle of MadDog for a couple of bucks.

It could be OK pour some out into a clear glass and check to see if you see any mold floating in the glass. Good Luck!

a bottle of wine opened and kept in room temperature must be consumed within 24 hours.

if it will be kept in a refrigerator up to 7 days max.

the oxygen going into an opened bottled will make the wine lose its flavor.

just dump your old wine

I think I would probably throw it out. I don't think it would hurt you but it would probably taste awful.

Yes your wine begins going bad as soon as air hit's it. Air can carry bacteria in it and when the bacteria get 's to that sugar in the wine "it party time". your wine will go sour and spoil, after a couple weeks of sitting un-corked I wouldn't trust it! Now if you opened the bottle had a few sips and put the cork back in, then left it out it should be fine because any bacteria that made it in, will have the sugar they crave but no air, so they won't last long enoug to cause any damage.

Hope this helps, Bottoms Up!

It doesn't get moldy or anything like that. If it tastes ok, then it IS ok, otherwise it gets kind of vinegary. It is still ok, it just tastes like crap

Once red wine is opened, it will keep for about a week, although finishing it that day is definately recommended. it will gradually lose it's nice flavor and turn more sour as the days go on. Red wine is NOT meant to be refrigerated, even after opening.
