i know at one of the court ordered education classes you were required to attend when you got a dui arrest or a drug arrest they had you do a exercise that went something like this....
you had to total the amount of money you spent on beer the night of your arrest....total your bail to get out of jail....total the amount of car tow and impounding of vehicle....total your fine when you went to court....total your monitoring fees for monitoring or colored code fees...probabtion fees...total the amount of the class that the court ordered you to attend(which is NOT cheap)....anyway...at the end of all of that you had to combine the complete total of the entire expense of the night of your arrest....the end number is insane trust me....then they made you divide that total number by the number of beers or drinks you had that night....the point is they wanted you to see a visual of how much each beer cost when you considered all of the consquences and fees fines and not to mention you had to even include the fines of having your license reestablished ....long story but it is a real eye opener to think that just that risk of driving while drinking cost you thousands (not to mention you had to do different exercises regarding the risk you put others in by indangering their life by drinking and driving)...at the end of the exercise most of the class realized that just that night alone they spent like 300.00 per drink....it was very powerful....it made you do a inventory of the risk you took....bottom line a cab or a destinated driver is much cheaper not to mention it could save your life and all those on the road.....drinking and driving is NOT a wise choice and it can even be a deadly choice!
The class was a eye opener it not only made you do a financial inventory but a moral inventory.....because you had to describe oral to the whole class the whole arrest and how you felt when you had to face your family, friends and coworker....how you felt when your name was plastered in the paper...some even lost their jobs because of it....then it educationed you on what alcohol or drugs does to each and every organ in your body....so you had to come full circle and face the root and cause of your choices and then they had you do role playing of how you would make a wiser and safer decision in the future....
over all it was a real eye opener and made a huge positive impact....
oh and as far as the cost goes for alcohol abuse....it goes way way way beyond money....the cost also includes the respect you lost for yourself, the respect your family and friends lost in you, the guilt and shame you have to burden, the list goes on and on...way beyond anything you can give a dollar number for because those are things that are much more valuable then money....
