How does one obtain a bartending lisence?!


Question: I'd like to be a bartender, I know you have to go to school for it/take classes.. but how do you go about doing that, how long does it take, where, and is it hard??

Actually, you don't have to go to school. Most states require a "Server's Certificate" or something of that sort in order to serve alcohol legally. It usually costs under $30, you have to take a 1 hour course and take a written test.

Bartender's school, on the other hand is a waste of money. The people who run bars could care less if their bartenders took classes. A good drink dictionary serves the same purpose and its a lot cheaper.

However, most bars will not hire bartenders that don't have any experience. The best thing to do is get a job as a server or bar-back and work your way up. You'll need to be able to multi-task at a busy bar and have great customer service skills.
