Question: i purchased mama juana in the dominican, but couldn't take it back to the states. anybody know why?

you can bring it back in your checked luggage IF it is already in the alcohol....not separate. The dry material constitutes as "organic" material and is not allowed for biological reasons, but "cured" in the alcohol is ok. Those cute little palm hats fall into the same category..."organic" and can't be brought back.

We recently returned from Punta Cana and we had a dry bottle as well but also had a bottle of rum with us. The guy who searched our bags actually opened our bottle of rum and filled the bottle of mamajuana and then gave us very specific instructions on how to make the best mamajuana while 100 people stood in line behind us. It was hilarious! So just make sure to fill your bottle with rum before you go and then adjust the recipe when you get home. Enjoy!
