Why did Scarlet choose Charles over Rhett when Ashley turned her down?!

At that point, Rhett wasn't asking her. They'd only just met, and she didn't like him very much. Scarlett wanted to hurt Ashley--and Charles was Melanie's brother. She married him to spite Ashley, to try to make him jealous.
In the book, she has a child by Charles, conceived before he goes into the army and dies. In fact, in the book she has a child by each of her three husbands.
Enjoy! I'm watching it, too, even though I've seen it about a million times by now.
You would enjoy the book--it goes into much more detail, as books usually do.
