Does anyone else get a burning throat from alcohol?!
Answers: I can't seem to stand alcohol. I can't even take a sip without also taking some water. Wine is the worst, but even with sweety fruity drinks I can always tell there is alcohol in it. I know alcohol will cause some burning/flushing because it is irritating.... but does anyone else get this? Like all down the throat burning? Could this be an allergy?
Alcohol is an irritant, and you happen to be overly sensitive to it. It usually has to be about 7%abv and higher before you can smell and/or taste the alcohol (feel the sweet burn).
Alcohol causes the burn because it absorbs water, and over a certain percentage, it will try to absorb the water out of your cells. The process is called osmosis, and the burn is simply the alcohol trying to dry out your moist mouth/throat cells. This is why as the %alcohol goes up in a beverage, it tends to burn even more. Drinks like everclear that are almost 95% pure alcohol, can actually cause the cells to rupture because of the extreme osmotic pressure.
As for your case with wine, the burning can also be from the high acid content as well. This is not an allergy, you're just sensitive.
No, I can't stand the taste of hard liquor. I just take shots, so it goes quickly instead of mxing.
I don't think its allergies maybe your not use to it. Plus you can always go to your doc and get pills for that. My sis takes a pill before drinking and shes fine no burning no puking.
i don't think so its is most alchol burns when it goes down so you probably just have no tolerance for it.
alcohol burns!! pure and simple- when u drink it- put it on an open wound or put a fire to it- it is a flammable substance

Some drinks will do this to me, too. But after a few of them, I don't care. I just start singing "burn baby burn".
If all drinks burn your throat, you might not want to drink. Period. No one ever said you had to drink to have a good time. Besides, if you don't drink, you can be the designated driver. Then you'll get flowers from all your friends with notes saying "You're the bestest friend ever. Thanks for last night."
