Cheap alcohol and tesco's?!

Question: tesco's want to work with the other supermarkets to raise prices of alcohol, I dont think that will solve it (Binge Drinking) and just raise profits for the supermarkets, was just in Spain and they had wine at 40 cents thats about 30 pence a litre, did not see no problems with binge drinking

The price of alcohol has nothing to do with the UK's binge drinking culture. If people want to binge drink, then they will, regardless of price. It is not supermarkets and cheap drinks, nor is it pubs with happy hours etc causing this. It is more like the attitude of the binge drinkers themselves that is causing it and that is what needs looked at.

As you said, Spain sells alcohol cheaply, yet no problems were seen with binge drinking. How can this be? I have been informed that the Spanish see being drunk as something not to be proud of, so while they do enjoy a drink, they don't binge like the Brits. Plus the fact that if you go out for a drink there, there is usually a tapas served with a drink, even if it is a bowl of nuts.

Maybe Britain needs to change it's attitude towards what counts as a good night out rather than inflating the cost of drink.

The supermarkets make me sick they hike the prices up knowing they will still sell the alcohol.

Yeah i heard that this morning as well, i dont think that it will sort out binge drinking either, its just for the supermarkets to earn more money!! If people want to binge drink they will....

it wont solve anything if people want to binge drink they will doesnt matter how much alcohol is

I work in tesco and they have a very strict policy with regard to the sale of alcohol to minors. If you look under 21 you wont be served and if it can be proven that a checkout operator sold alcohol to a minor then that operator will be dismissed and fined £5000. Raising the price wont stop binge drinking. Zero tolerance by the authorities will.

We do have a serious problem in the UK with binge drinking but they don't know why. Recently they did a survey about 24 hr. drinking in Italy. They found that the majority of young people were drinking more coffee than alcohol and it is very much the same in France.
I don't think by raising the prices in the supermarkets is the answer, they need to find the root cause of the problem not collect more revenue. It's just another con.

It's not the fact that alcohol is too cheap- it is the fact that (a) so much is consumed and (b) people don't know how to behave on it!

It'll put me off drinking.....Then again I only drink about 8 cans a week anyway. Four on a Wednesday and four on a Friday. I guess all the non drinkers will be rich and all the binge drinkers and alcoholics will be mugging people for beer money. Upping the prices on addictive substances doesn't usually stop people from using them. Take a look at cigarettes for the proof of that. People will always get the money from somewhere be it their savings account or child's lunch money.

They are trying to make yet another morals based case for increasing taxation - its a con

The real problem is alcoholic strength which is way higher than it used to be

The solution limit the alcoholic strength of beers and ciders that supermarkets can sell and ban any over 6% ccompletely

Whether or not the price of alcohol is raised, it will not stop people buying it. The same as cigarettes, the prices increase & increase but still people choose to smoke. It will be the same with alcohol.............MONEY SPINNERS !!!! What next ???

Rising prices on "vice" products rarely solves anything.
People just cut back elsewhere to find the money to pay for their vice.
At best, it's "band-aid" medicine.
If you want to reduce "binge drinking" you need to examine the "Why" of this and deal with that. And the reason people binge has nothing to do with the cost of alcohol.

..If people want it they tend to pay for it eg. cigarettes- and their price just keeps increasing. It will make no difference to binge drinking. I think binge drinking is more about lack of education, attitude, social grouping etc. When i started drinking we could just about get into pubs and clubs underage and tried to remain "adultly" sober/sensible so we didn't get kicked out. Now everywhere is so strict on Id, young people drink outside in gangs. There is nowhere for teens to go and in this country experimenting with drink etc is like a rite of passage. We need to change the attitude and culture of drinking in Britain, not have supermarkets profiting again!
