Whats more common when ordering a martini?? gin or vodka?
Answers:
Nowadays its mostly vodka.. most people don't drink the traditional martinis anymore.. The first ones were made with gin. Vodka didnt fully come into the picture untill the 1980's. But because one can never be sure you always have to ask the person what they want gin or vodka? dry or wet? dirty or not? People nowaday's just stare at me with a stupid look when these questions are asked.. which tells me they have been watching to much James Bond.
as a side note...
Flavored Martini's dont qualify as an actual Martini...Anyone can take a shot and put it in a martini glass and call it a martini.

vodka for beginners...gin is for more hard core....
Just from my observation, I have noticed alot of people order vodka martinis, perhaps it's because of James Bond fame or something. Both are pretty popular though. It just depends on a person's preference.
Vodka is more common in Missouri. You should try going to a Martini bar sometime. They usually have about 100 different kinds. It's a lot of fun! Try it.
It's actually a matter of preference. For the flavored martini's, such as the Lemon Drop, Sour Apple, etc. they generally use vodka. For the traditionalists, like myself, then its a good gin (I prefer Tangeray), clean, with an extra olive!
When I was a bartender, I'd say about 90% of martini drinkers order vodka martinis. It's become so popular that most flavored martinis are made with vodka as well. Simply delicious!
It is traditionally made with gin however, because of james bond there is a growing popularity of vodka martinis.
I usually go for vodka! I don't like the Gin too much!
It depends on the age of the drinker. For people in their 20s and 30s it is almost exclusively vodka in the martini. For older people it tends to be more gin than vodka. I think this has a lot more to do with the fact that gin is an acquired taste than the fact that James Bond preferred his martini with vodka.
Traditional Martini's are made with Gin. Today though most ordered Martini's are made with Vodka (usually a "flavored" martinit), and more than likely both Vodka and Gin.
James Bond did not make the Vodka Martini popular, 007's Martini is still made with a hefty mixture of Gin:
The Vesper (aka 007 Martini, or James Bond's Martini):
Three measures of Gin, One of Vodka, Half a measure of Kina Lillet, Shaken (not Stirred). Add thin slice of Lemon for Garnish.
VODKA! & if your going w/ a martini, go for ONLY the BEST--GRAY GOOSE! Ahhh!
Vodka by far is the most common ordered Martini.
If you want to have a traditional Martini, and my favorite, try a Perfect Tanqueray Martini... shake 1 1/4 oz. Tanqueray gin with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass dashed with a hint of dry vermouth, garnish with an olive or two. You can also ask for it at a bar, most bartenders know the drink.
Careful, don't drink more than two, unless you enjoy slurring your words and stumbling.
Gin is more common. That's why a martini with gin is called a martini and a martini with vodka is called a VODKA martini
Traditional martinis are made with gin. Vodka became popular later.
