Actually, it depends on the worms.
Earthworms eat, well, earth. They can process soil and pull out the basic nutrients.
Many "worms" are actually the larval stage of many insects. They often eat different things that they can process (maggots eat flesh and blood, caterpillars eat plants, etc.).
To eat trash you would need a mix of many different types of worms because trash is made up of so many different things. Even then some materials (like metals and other chemicals) would still be left over.
