Apparently some people take offense from your question but I, personally, believe that it can be for numerous reasons...
curiosity, stress, peer presure... and sometimes (I'd say most times in HS) because you're angry at the world or at someone or something.... It falls under a stage where you think all has gone wrong in your life and you think to yourself... "well, if everyone can hurt me... why cant I?" but even then, I think it comes down to . . . "If someone really cares, they'll notice"

Well, that was my situation... it sounds stupid and lame... but what can we do, we really don't know any better. Thankfully I'm out of that now because someone did love me, and someone did care! It was my Lord Jesus!

wtf kay.....dont lie to yourself. you know you knew better you just dont wanna admit it because you dont wanna take responsibility for it. Everyone that drinks in high school knows full well what they're doing they just don't care. Report It

I dont care if you drink (or did drink), its cool with me, but dont lie that you didnt "know any better". just admit that you chose to drink. Report It

It annoys me that people say that because they're just looking for attention. Don't be that person, stand up for yourself. Everything else in your answer was right on and i agree with all of it except the last part, all im saying Report It

  • Lack of acceptance from peers in school

Depression, lack of acceptance, maybe a tragic experience.

To escape the monotony of every day life.
    Peer pressure.
They don't have a hawg to cruise the hiways on.

People turn to that disgusting hurtful stuff (is that discriptive enough lol) because they want to release stress, or peer preasure from their "friends". Drugs and alcohol are about the nastiest things in the world.

Give up on life as a means of responsibilty

    maybe because it's.......... fun!

i don't know why there is such a big deal about it --most people are just trying to have a good time

to forget about there problems that's why I drink

Not all people who drink are alcoholics and not everyone who take drugs are addicts. So you should rephrase the question why do people become alcoholics and drug addicts. As you can see people automatically assume the worse. People turn to what makes them feel comfortable, some food, some drugs, some gambling, some jogging, some soccer, however anything in excess is unhealthy.

To relax... to get away from the world... Sometimes after working a long day it is nice to come home to a glass of wine...

    Because they kick A$$.

because they have nothing better to do, look at all the people who drink they usually are people who have never succeeded in life so they put there feelings towards the alcohol and thats the wrong way about going at it, they have to understand that there losing at one thing wait until they are older they will be losing there life.

To give me something to do, And catch a nice buzz doing it....

    Boredom. Apathy.

But I think mostly escapism. There are many forms of escapism: food, substance abuse, cigarettes, entertainment, etc. Some people cannot cope with their daily life unless they have something that relaxes them to look forward to.

depression, insecurity, boredom, seeking acceptance from peers, heredity, rebelliousness, curiosity, seeking relaxation, trying to sleep, the list goes on and on and on. Everyone has their own reason.
