Whats the most famous wine in California?
Answers:
Nappa valley has many. As a single wine I would not know. The best wine I have tasted is a wine made from grapes that were frozen on the vine when they were picked and squeezed befor they thawed out..Its darn expensive but worth trying.
Gallo
Beringer
Alright, it's hard to really say what is the famous wine in California, but it would definitely would from Napa Valley, seeing as that's the most popular region in America for wine.
Kendall Jackson is very popular, and in a lot of Restaurants. I don't know if it's the most famous. A very famous wine is Opus One. It's incredibly popular amongst wine lovers. Branching off from Opus One, Robert Mondavi (one of the creator of Opus One) is famous, in fact, he just got inducted into the Vinters Hall of Fame this year by the Culinary Institute of America.
Another famous is Caymus Special Selection 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon.
Difficult, if not impossible, to name California's most famous wine. Although Sideways ( the movie ) focused on Pinot, most high profile reds from Napa or Sonoma are based on Cabernet either as a stand alone varietal or as the base grape for a blended wine.
Screaming Eagle, Opus One, Harlan Estate, Stag's Leap are all well-known and highly regarded.
My choice would be Ridge Montebello Cabernet - a unique blind tasting was held in the 1970's which matched Ridge and several other outstanding California wines against some of the top 1st Growths from Bordeaux. The California wines held their own against the more heralded French wines and Ridge Cab was deemed to be the best overall. The success of the California wines at this tasting proved that California could produce world-class red wines comparable to the best of Bordeaux. The same wines were retasted again in a blind tasting just two years ago and again the Ridge cabernet was judged superior.
Also; famous does not always equate with quality. ie: Gallo Hearty Burgundy and Two Buck Chuck are 'famous' wines so it depends on your criteria.....
