I would go with a Port than, if you want a nice sweet, red wine. They work well as dessert wines. There are a bunch that can be found in your price range such as:

Sandeman Port
Dows 10 Year Old Port

Those two are very good and should be in your price range.

Lambrusco is made by Reunite-really really good...not exactly Stag's Leap by any stretch, but still really good and nicely priced!

Sangria

Try a white merlot

buy any bottle of gallo red wine all of their wines are goood

To answer your question one would have to know what your tastes are. Some like very dry some like medium dry some like sweet. Ask where you buy it. Buy a smaller bottle to see if it is what you like. I dislike dry. On a scale from 0 to 5 I would choose a 3 it is not too sweet but my palate prefers it. Dont be fooled by a fancy label and A cork..If it is for a dinner red with meat white with fish.

if you have access to Duplin wines from North Carolina Bald head red, if not go for I love my goat from New York, and if you want something bubbly Banfi's Rosa Regale is out Standing with chocolate.

As a Wine Consultant I get asked this a lot. I suggest a wine made from the Gamay grape from Brouilly in the Burgundy region of France. this lighter style of wine exhibits lots of red fruit on the nose and palate. The finish is soft with a slight bit of acidity. It is a great red wine for beginners.
