Why are alcoholic beverages called spirits?!

because it can change your personality I wonder why they have a soda name sprite they look like spirit from a glance.

Best I can figure that is exactly what it is,
but it doesn't say whether it is an evil spirit ,or a good one
But I'm sure we know..........
