To me, it tastes the way rubbing alcohol smells, only with an olive.

Martini is Gin based cocktail and Gin has no particular definable taste like sweet sour etc. The other ingredient is vermouth. I suggest you have a drink to find out exactly

A traditional martini is gin and vermouth- often served with olives. The dominate flavor would be the gin, with an after taste of olive juice. However, these days there are many flavors of martinis, many of which are made with vodka. Fruit flavors, etc.

like lighter fluid!

If they are made properly. they taste very good.

I think it's an acquired taste. No way something that smells like rubbing alcohol can have that many fans.

If you make them the right way (with gin), you can smell the nose up front. Plenty of juniper berries and a sharp, piney aroma. There's also a hint of licorice, orange peel and other unidentifiable herbals.

When you drink it, the first sensation you get is the cold from the chilled contents followed by a combination of aromatics -- a bouquet of all that went into the making of the gin. Any bitterness is hopefully balanced by the luxuriousness sweetness and warmth of the vermouth. The after is astringent, but also clean and pleasant.

You could write poetry about it. Or you could mix one and try it for yourself. Don't skimp on the gin. Life's too short to bend down to the bottom shelf. I suggest Tanqueray (JFK's favorite), or Bombay Sapphire (a newcomer, but a nice, clean choice).

If it is made right, Heaven.
