Most people use 2 oz (1/4 cup) of tequila in margaritas, so by that stance, you would then use 6 oz (3/4 cup) of mix for 1 large margarita.

However, most mixes are garbage; a mix of yellow food coloring and corn syrup. There's really only 1 great one on the market, but unless you're in the San Francisco area you can't get it. That one is Tommy's, named for the tequila capital bar of the world, which is also in San Francisco.

Assuming you don't live there, I MUCH prefer doing this to make a killer margarita:

2 oz tequila - make sure it's a 100% agave tequila, and then select either a blanco or a reposado, as anejo is a waste in a margarita.

juice of 1 lime freshly squeezed

1 TBS agave nectar (made from the same agave cactus as tequila). Bar syrup will also work

splash of water.

Just shake that with ice, and serve on the rocks or straight up. MUCH better than any mix (aside from Tommy's).

If you want to add orange liqueur, such as Grand Marnier, Cointreau or Triple Sec, use about 1 oz, though they really aren't traditional in Mexico (obviously from the French name), and I usually skip it.

One part could be a 1/4 cup or 1 cup or whatever much you wanted to make.

and don't forget the triple sec and some fresh lime juice. I'd make it at least 1 part fresh lime juice instead of 1 part mix. As answered previously, a "part" is any measure you want it to be as long as you use the same measure, an ounce, say, for all ingredients. My favorite margarita recipe is 3 parts tequila, 2 parts mix/lime juice and 1 part triple sec.

This is my absolute favorite recipe for margaritas and you don't even need to worry about the parts! All you need is a can of the frozen limeade, silver tequila, and triple sec. Here's a link with directions, and specific amounts:
