What purpose does the flip-up-lid on a beer stein serve?!

the scots invented the beer stein back in the 9th c it was used to keep the English form drinking there beer and whiskey alas with little success this was the cause of the great war when the Bruce and Wallace fought to keep the thirsty English out of Scotland the Irish were not so lucky as they were seldom sober enough to work or fight well, in battle the irish would just fall down drunk all this is recorded in the history of the whiskey wars by saint Bernard of asisa

keep flies, dust, contaminents outta ya beer, dunno the exact history but there are different reasons in diff countries... even keep it colder... they hell sweet, i have a sweedish one..
