Does the term "bastard" carrying more meaning to beer than meets the eye?!

Question: I have come across the word "bastard" with several different microbrews (stone arrogant bastard ale, in the description of bear republic's red rocket ale, poor bastard, etc.) I'm just trying to find out if the term has some sort of relevence or meaning with beer or if it just used as an advertising word.

My friend who did some home brew, thinks it's just advertising.

Perhaps it's just to imply it isn't refined? More robust-flavored?

Interesting question, thanks! I'll see what other folks say!

I think it is just a brand...

Maybe it means it is high in alcohol content and you might find yourself with a few illegitimate children after a big night.

Well, 'bastard' either means 'fatherless' or 'half-breed'. So it could either mean fatherless as its a microbrew(no parent company) or, less likely, some kind of hybrid brewing.
