Scotch and ice?!

Question:

Scotch and ice?

why when i am drinking scotch on the rocks to the ice cubes just sometimes pop and crack while the glass is just sitting there?

Answers:
Water expands when it freezes. When you put some ice in your drink, the outside of the ice warms quickly while the inside of the ice stays cold. The popping sounds and the cracking occur when this happens and the outside of the ice is trying to contract and the the inside stays cold enough to remain hard, it cracks to relieve the pressure of the outside shrinking. It's the same reason that a road or your driveway cracks in the winter.

It isn't melting at a uniform rate, with minor variations in crystalline structure causing tiny little earthquakes. And it's your own fault. It's April, so there's no reason to contaminate you whisky with ice as there might be in the middle of summer.

it's because the air in the ice is escaping as the ice warms up cursing the popping and cracking sound. It's the same when you try it with warm soft drink.

when ice is realy cold and you touch it it because its the first sign of melting.. the same goes for when you put ice in a cup with liquid in it.

You should just add a dash of ice cold water and that won't happen and it is the way it is supposed to be drunk
