An alcoholic drink asks for dry ice to make it fog, but I thought you're not supposed to consume dry ice?!

Question: Here's the link to the recipe

Is it just a matter of diluting the dry ice with all the liquids which makes it edible? Any insight to this would be awesome, I want to serve this drink without giving people unhealthy doses of Co2.

Dry ice doesn't melt or dilute. It goes straight from solid to gas form. Which is why when you put it in a drink you get bubbles.

In that particular recipe because you pack the ice to the bottom of the bowl to keep it from floating to the top there isn't even much danger of ingesting it in solid form...an act that would, like the other person said, freeze you mouth off. :)

At any rate it is perfectly safe to use in a drink as long as you don't eat the solid form. It is the same thing that makes your Pepsi bubble.

Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide, you can't consume it because it would freeze your lips and tongue solid, I assume it would carbonate the water like a soda after it melted which wouldn't take long

The only health problem will be if they freeze their lip on the ice cube. We are constantly breathing small amounts of CO2 (since we exhale it into the air around us).

As the dry ice sublimates (turns in to gas) the solid will lose volume and will eventually totally evaporate, allowing your guests to dring the whole drink. If they get near the bottom and some ice remains, just give them a refill until the ice is all gone.

Give them a straw to drink the last dregs of the drink, before refilling. As was stated before, you won't actually be consuming the dry ice.

Just be sure to handle it carefully. Wear heavy work gloves. Other wise, you'll freeze your hands. Literally. lol

It's dry ice, not liquid nitrogen, it's not going to freeze anything solid. A very small piece of dry ice in the drink will make it "fog" quite nicely. By the time all of the ooohh's and aaaahhh's are finished the dry ice will be dissipated and the drink safe to consume. Even if there is still a small piece left it won't hurt anything.

The dry ice doesn't actually go in the drink, it goes in the punch bowl. It isn't going to poison your punch. It may be harmful to swallow dry ice, but if you follow the directions, and pack it at the bottom of the bowl, you should not have any problems.
