I have a serious question that I have to know the answer to?
I have recently purchased a coffee mug and on the bottom is said "Proposition 65 requires the State of California to display on any beverage holder with a colored exterior had lead. Lead is known to the state of California to cause birth deffects, problems with pregnancy, and other reproductive harm"
ummm I might want kids some day
do I want to know how serious this is.
Is this bad?
Answers:
As luck will have it, you will usually hold beverages on the inside of the container, not the exterior which contains lead.
If you are living in Southern California, I would be much more concerned with the reproductive harm from smog.
Kids are overated, smell bad, and leech of off you. use the cup
I've asked this same question before. I've had "fiesta" lights that said the same thing on the package. I think in California they're crazy about writing about how there's lead in stuff. What it comes down to is that there is lead in a whole bunch of things you use on a regular basis, such as window blinds. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Maybe if your pregnant you should drink from it less, but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.
You know when you go to the gas station there's a sign that says "The State of California requires this facility to disclose that chemicals known to cause cancer and birth defects are located on this premises ". You still put fuel in your car right?
Prop 65 is there to let you know of the possibility of chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive harm. I have that sign up here at my place of employment, and we're a small machine shop. I have to have it up just because we have a locker of chemicals, like 1 gallon of acetone, and we are required by Prop 65 to post it. Look around... WalMart has it posted too. Does that make you not want to shop there because of that? I don't think so. I don't think that using it once in a while will harm you. But I would go and purchase a new one if you're looking at drinking out of it daily.
In Illinois (where I live) if you buy a house built before 1950 (or 1960 I think) you have to sign a lead paint warning disclaimer. I guess paint was made with lead back then. And I guess there are some idiots who eat paint chip off windowsills. Go figure. But I myself collect Fiesta ware, old and new. When my daughter was young I didn't let her use any Fiesta ware. I guess I'm superstitious, but why chance it? There are many different types of coffee mugs on the market. Are you that attached to the one you have? Lots of luck.
I dont think honey that its going to effect you having kids but I sure wouldnt mess around with lead because of the cancerous and long term effects it can have.
