Smoothness, lightness, cleanness come from the amount of times one distills the whisky.
Irish has a reputation for being smooth because it's triple distilled. Try Redbreast.
Scotch is generally double distilled, except for a few like Auchentoshan. But if you can find a bottle, I'd have to say Rosebank (it'll be pricey, but worth it). Glenmorangie has the tallest necked stills (the "pot" you boil the beer to make whisky) which makes theirs smoother than many.
Hopefully this helps. Good hunting.

Johnny Walker Blue Label the good stuff!

Crown Royal

the blue label

jack daniels single barrel.

i dont like whiskey personally (drank way too much once, cant even take the smell anymore), but this stuff is what i used to drink, and the only kind my fiance will drink

depends on what kind of whiskey you want...
bourbon try woodford reserve...god its like heaven in a bottle
Irish Paddy's is good but try either of the glens...glen livett or glen fiddich...both very nice
scotch...Johnny walker blue or better..they go all the way to green or gold or even black...those are very good
also try some jack Daniels single barrel...that's great drinking
when it comes right down to it any single malt Irish or scotch is good its all up to you

for whiskey I like Makers Mark
for whisky I like Aberlour A'Bunadh or McCallens

Both Glenlivit & Glenfiddich are single malt scotch whisky's from the highland region of scotland...not Irish whiskey

For Irish Whiskey I generally go for Bushmills or Jameson, as they are both readily available, not too expensive, and quite nice... If I find Paddy's on the shelf I would be happy to give it a try, but unlike scotch or bourbon, once I crack a bottle of Irish whiskey, it usually gets consumed all in one night...I kinda lose control on the stuff...could be something in the genes I guess...or it could be the company that I keep when I am drinking it...

any label is a good label but Johnny Walker's Blue label is worth so much more than they ask for it...

If money is no object....

Crown Royal XR (Extra Rare)

About $250 a bottle.

It is $25 a shot where I bartend at!
