How much is the tax on a bottle of whisky in the UK?!

Question: That's a difficult question, because the way the tax is worked out is really complicated, all the answers above are wrong because you can't simply express it as a percentage. Basically the tax on spirits (such as whisky) is:

"£19.56 per litre of pure alcohol"

which means that if you had a litre sized bottle, and the alcohol percentage was 100%, the tax would be £19.56. So to calculate it for a bottle of whisky:

If you assume a bottle of whisky is 700ml, and contains 40%vol. alcohol, then;

19.56 x 0.7 x 0.4 = £5.48

far too much

110%

Its 17.5% here, just about everything is

127.5%

Well, it's not 17.5% as one of the other answerers has said. It's 72.5%.
