1. yes. depends on the Mash(stuff they used to make the liquer) If it had stems in it or corn husks or any thing with plant cellulose, it could make methyl alcohol (commonly wood grain alcohol) instead of ethyl alcohol. methyl alcohol is a toxin that, among other things like liver failure and kidney damage, will make you blind.
2. It depends on the temperature of the mash and the length and temperature of the cooling tube. If you get the mash to about 212 F and cool it through a 3 foot length 3 inch diameter tube slowly enough you can get absolutely pure alcohol from this. be careful this is potent stuff. (take one shot , feel fine. take two and check your car the next morning for dents)

not sure

1. known to have happened when condensers were lead soldered.
2. You just described basic brandy making. output is not pure alcohol on single pass- 40/50 proof though is common.

Someone has to screw up very very badly when making liquor to cause someone to go blind from drinking it. The way that rumor got started was moonshiners cutting whiskey with denatured alcohol containing methanol.

It takes at least three passes through a still like that to make pure alcohol. That is illegal in most countries.

lots of info

Methyl alcohol will blind you, but so will alcohol poisoning (I think)

And so far as the still process goes both those guys got it, it really depends on how well you have your set up made and how well you use it.

Also pure alcohol is called moonshine, and when alcohol was under prohibition moonshine would cause blindness cuz ppl would get alcohol poisoning from it.

Dont have sources, just what I've gathered from 2 friends who distilled booze :D
