Answers:
maybe he was making sun tea
my nan has a bottle of water outside her door and I was thinking the same thing!!
Perhap's he's confused.
Usually you put bottles of water upside down in your garden to act as a kind of slow drip watering system.
Maybe someone told him that's what he needed in his garden and he sawed off the bottom of the bottle instead...
its his water feature
Most of the time it is to keep birds away the reflecting light scares them away.
maybe its some crazy ritual to the gods to ask for sunny weather, thus having bottles of water in the garden showing that we dont need more rain--though i actualy like the rain-- tell that person to stop his madness!! theres a hosepipe ban after all!!
He will have made holes in the base and sides of the bottles so that the water slowly leaks out and keeps the ground moist so that the plants have a constant water supply!
Keeps flies away from the house and garden.
Scarecrows
Well someone once told me it was to scare cats away, and when I asked this question at work the other day, the lady told me it was for the slugs.
But she didnt elaborate, and I didnt ask further cos I didnt want to sound dumb!
So sorry, I dont no either, I looked at this question cos I thought it might give me the answer.
I've heard its something to do with slugs, they fall in and drown or something like that.
you can do it with pints of beer as well, slugs love beer and they have a drink and splosh in they go.
but after reading everyone elses answers it could also be to slowly irrigate their plants?
To make there grass all lovely and moist in hot sun
Maybe he just left his shopping outside?
To keep the aliens away
I have heard it is to keep the cats away. why? still wondering
Maybe he was worried he might dehydrate while mowing the lawn so he placed water strategically at intervals ...
or maybe it was a really ethical slug trap..
or maybe he's just a weirdo ... Run, run like the wind away from this oddball and notify the authorities ;-)
Usually it's for slugs which damage flowers/gardens. These containers are probably filled with beer or sugary water. Slugs are attracted to it, fall in, and die (they can't tread water or call for help).
