Rum, tequila, vodka.... what should i get?!
what are your recomendation for each?
Answers: im thinking of getting grey goose (vodka) captain morgan (rum) and i dont know what kind of tequila.
what are your recomendation for each?
Vodka, yes, goose is a great way to go. But only if you are going to be enjoying it either "neat," "on the rocks" or with tonic or soda with a squeeze of fruit. If you are mixing with juice, or flavored soda, get something less expensive, but isn't "rot-gut." Smirnoff has a "decent" vodka, and their flavors are pretty not bad as well as Stoli (a little pricier).
Rum- Again, it depends on what you want to do with it. If you're mixing with flavored soda, juice, whatever just stick with Bacardi. No frills, doesn't burn your throat, perfectly fine rum (with sexy girls in their commercials). Something with a little kick, "got a little captain in ya?" Of all the rums I've had, Captain is a good spiced rum. My favorite is Pussers, a Caribbean, very flavorful, kick in the pants rum. Great for frozen drinks, or with one cube of ice.
Tequila: El Tesoro, but this is a sipping/shooting teq. Its crisp and clean with that tequila kick and raw flavor, but finishes with a light peppery aftertaste...mmmm. Margaritas, its gotta be your cuervo. Its good, it doesn't tear up your tummy. Mix it with oj and a dash of cherry juice, and there's a great sunrise. Patron' (pronounced Pa-Tron) is the Absolute of Teq's. Great packaging & advertising. I see those commericals and I wanna drink it too. Problem is, they both are rail-worthy alcohols. Absolut with its dull earthy sadness and patron' with its bleh... : ) I'm tired, sue me.
To be honest, just have fun at the Liq store. Find something you've never had (thats in your price range) and buy it. I bought a vodka once with buffalo grass in it... awesome. Bison Vodka.
Ok, I'm done.
Goodnight and Happy Drinking!
If you are going to mix the grey goose with something else get Sky or Absolut, Captain is the best spiced rum and for tequila get Jose Quervo.
Drunk for sure
I am not really a tequila person, but I love '42 Below' for vodka (used to like Absolut), and I love Malibu the coconut rum.
I'm only going to comment on the tequila, seeing as most are missing the tequila mark.
If you are mixing, then Jose or Sauza will do if you want. Personally, I try to never touch that crap seeing as its only 51% tequila. Find a nice 100% Blue Agave if you want to drink something good.
Most will tell you to buy Patron, but I don't like it. Don't get me wrong, Patron is good stuff. The problem I have with it is that its not worth the price. The stuff is outrageously expensive. There are other brands out there that are just as good, but significantly cheaper. In my area there is a brand called De Los Altos that is just as smooth, and is $26 out the door for a fifth. Look around at your local liquor stores. Ask the clerk what the good stuff is.
Vodka (in order of preferance) - Grey Goose, Belvedere, Stoli
Rum - no real preferance. I either don't drink it enough or they all taste about the same to me.
Tequila - Some tequilas are very "oaky" as they have been aged in oak barrels (often used Jack Daniel's barrels) so they pick up a woodys flavor.
Some are kind of fruity tasting. Some can be a bit peppery.
Also to get the correct tequila experience, don't drink anything that doesn't say 100% agave (like junk like regular Cuervo or Sauza). These are cheap poorly made tequilas designed to sell to college kids to get drunk. They are only 51% real tequila, and the rest are fillers like corn syrup and grain alcohol (and thus the hangover the next day is born).
The aging has a lot to do with the taste, so try a few to see which style you like best, and then remember how the aging is labeled:
Blanco (because it's totally clear) - no aging
Reposado - minimally aged at least 2 months, but can be up to 1 year
Anejo - heavily aged, minimally 1 year but less than 3 years.
Some really expensive ones can even be aged longer than that, but you'll want to work your way up to those if you are new to tequila.
If you want one that doesn't have a harsh flavor, only look for reposados and anejos. Blancos and non-100% agave ones simply will be too rough.
For margaritas, Anejos are a waste, both due to the cost and because the flavor is so nice you'll want to savor it with maybe just some lime (skip the salt, and don't shoot it). If you want a tasty margarita, go for either blanco or reposado, although some of the longer aged reposados are great sipped (like Dos Lunas, which ages their tequilas almost twice as long as Mexican law requires).
Patron too, while good, is often mentioned because they spend more marketing dollars than any other tequila company, and thus when college kids are ready to move up from Cuervo, they often go to Patron as they see it advertised so much, and their exploration stops there. Make no mistake, Patron isn't bad by any means. But you can get better for less.
In a normal price range, tequilas I would recommend are:
Cazadores
Herradura
Don Julio
Corzo (please note this is not Cuervo)
Pura Sangre
Centinela
Cabo Wabo
Arette
Dos Lunas
