What is trendy in wine?!

Question: I have a group of people coming over who I only know somewhat. They meet up everyweek and I have been toa few of their houses and they always serve wine (one white, one red). They are pretty trendy people and some of them are very into wine and I don't know a merlot from grape juice. What kind of white and what kind of red are popular right now? I don't mean brand, I mean like merlot or chardonnay or cabernet sauvignon etc.? I have no clue what they like and since I don't like wine at all I'm just going to try to go with whatever is "in" right now and hope to make a good impression.

For whites: Sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio
Reds: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chianti

Rhone varietals or blends. Shiraz from Australia, Petite Syrah, Mouvedre, Carignan, Grenache - all are more trendy than cap, merlot and chardonnay.

Rhone blends too.

Any Louis Jadot wines Red or Whites, You will make a good impession....

Go to a store that specializes in wine. He will know what is hot in your area. Yes...it does vary quite a bit.

But I'd do a Pinot Grigio and a Merlot.

White: Voignier; Red: Pinot Noir
They are "IN".
