Does old alcohol lose it's punch?!

Question: I don't drink anymore. But one night, I needed something. Found a bottle of 150 proof rum in the refrigerator and had a shot, then another. Felt nothing. Empty stomach and all, I felt nothing and never got a buzz. The bottle's been in there for 10 years, opened. Did it lose it's kick sitting in the cold? I don't understand why I didn't feel it.

Its possible some alcohol did evaporate. This will not happen with sealed containers, but even a slightly defective seal could release the alcohol. Over 10 years, I'm sure there's a chance it happened.

On the other hand, pour yourself a shot. Light it on fire. If it takes a flame, you know its over 100 proof. That's a pretty conclusive test. 100 proof is still enough to make you feel something.

if it can evaporate the alcohol will evaporate first. It is more volatile. So yes, it can be watered down over time.

No, It will last indefinitely....

The only alcohol that wont evaporate and loose its punch is really good wine.

i think it stays

No...liquor doesn't go bad (high alcohol)..High alcohol percentage liquor should last indefinitely from what I've learned.(35-40% and up, spirits).
You can even store it in the freezer, and it won't freeze.
The key is keeping the cover/cap on tight, otherwise it can take on smells of other open products or odors from the air if not sealed.
