Live Bands? Contests where your customers actually win something they might want-I'm thinking a trip or a car or something expensive-get the local Microbrewery involved and maybe get some sponsership for something-maybe start having Team night-draft by the pitcher for a team that comes in-first jug free-all others at a special price

FREE BOOZE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

have live bands,
have karaoke,
have quiz nights,
have theme nights

get your local "awesome" radio station to do a remote
they come, party and say the name of your place 1800 times :)

OH! or if myspace is big in your area, have a myspace night where myspace freaks in the area can meet in person and hang out

People love free stuff, and winning stuff!! How about a pageant- Miss "your club name" Make it on a slower night over three or four weeks. Have your beer reps give you prizes, throw in some cash (make it really good!) The contestants would bring all of their friends, and maybe you could attract some guys wanting to check out the pretty girls!! Well good luck!

Hire a DJ to play music and take request.

Karaoke

Happy Hour Drinks

After work open buffet once a week from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Menu: Buffalo wings, meatball sandwiches, veggie platter, pasta salad, hoagie platter.

Dance contest once a week, offer a prize, like movie tickets for two, gift card to popular clothing store or restaurant, etc.

Movie Night, if you have a DVD player and TV,offer free popcorn, pretzels, peanuts, etc.

Have you considered theme days and nights such as Israeli occupation bulldozer week whereby you destroy the homes of your potential customers, forcing them to drink at your bar because they have nowhere else to go or if that doesn't work why not bomb your local power station?

Other than that I've run out of ideas, oh unless you want to attack water pumping stations, cutting off vital supplies to bring serious contagious disease to your customers homes, putting their children's lives at risk.

This is a basic question on marketing, and loads has been published about it. Who do you want to come to your bar? Personally, I go for spittoons, pipes, chess sets, classical music and good food, with no women or children, but that's just me. You choose your target market, do some questionnaires, develop a unique selling point, and advertise like crazy. (Signed) Wayne, 15

GOOD live bands. Covers or originals, doesnt matter. They draw the crowds and get the people going.

I only go where the music is good. Screw the prices. Music sets the mood. I know alot of my friends are the same.

race night, Stars in their eyes, Blind Date, karaoke competition with prize money(heats to be held on a friday instead of saturday), Mr&Mrs, 70s/80s fancy dress disco, barbecues(summer obviously if there is room outside), perhaps some cheapish food (chilli, pasta etc)provided on these nights-good if the singles are heading elsewhere after. Probably not a good idea for any of these to be weekly events- once a month to start with but if you can get them in the door initially and its a fun night you can bet on some of them returning!

Promote something at the pub which will entice women. Happy hour on cocktails, buy one get one free on wine or something similar. If he can entice the girls then the men will follow.

Not too helpful I know, but for the life of me I can't think what lures me and my girlfriends to certain bars!!!

Have 1 minute speed interviews.

Take polaroid pictures and pin them to the wall.

All sorts of things you can do.

I've been to a nice bar in Rand burg South Africa. They have a competition that they call AROUND THE WORLD IN 60 MIN. its easy u get 18 Countries around the world and for each country u throw a shot. Now when they begin they pay the full price of the game(Depends on Ur bar price's). If they don't finish no payback if they finish very rarely they get there money back. If they finish in the time limit of 60 minutes there name will get on a steel plate at the top of the bar. The place we've been to is running this thing for about 3 years now and only 7 people have finished it in the time limit.

Have a bikers night once a month and lay on free BBQ burgers and stuff for the first few months. Have one night a month for bikers, another night once a month for hot rods and so on. Do the same thing for each group. It'll cost you to start with but they'll soon be regulars and then you drop the freebies.

Where is your bar?? Update with a name and location.

You have got to get karaoke. I know some people say it's rubbish and they don't like it but, trust me, I have noticed how these said persons are the ones that are singing along all the time - they are dying to get up there and have a go themselves!
Once you get a few drinks in them they will provide the entertainment for the other customers!

First of all, I hope you did your location research. Is where you are the best place for a bar? Why? What kind of people does your bar apply to? If you know, you should already have the answer to your question. If you don't, you're to late to do the research yourself. Pay someone who knows how to do public relations research to find out what is the demographic of your area. Then, apply your bar to them. Find out what sports the area likes. Find out what music is the average listened to music there, find out what the local views of politics are and so on. After that, introduce themes to those demographics. Special cocktails only available on one night by one bartender. Do that every night. Only staff bartenders that think outside the box and now how to give their clients the best possible time. Live music, lighting, clean, open minded place where anyone is welcome yet focused on your regulars.

All of this is the research you should do before opening a bar. Sounds like you didn't. Hire a head bartender that has at least five years in the trade with leadership experience and organizational experience. Let him or her do what they do and you worry about paying the bills. Owning a bar isn't as easy as you thought it was going to be is it? I own three. I did the research before hand and it shows.

Good Luck.

I don't think there is any real magic answer although there are a lot of great suggestions for activities to keep new people coming in. Any buisiness owner will tell you that the most valuable thing is the repeat customer. The best thing you can do as a bar owner is be there as much as you can and "sell yourself" as they say. Mingle with the patrons some and make sure they are having a good time. Maybe even buy a drink here and there if it suits the occasion. It's really cool to go to a bar that you feel like you know the owner of dontcha think?

Send for Pete Tong.

Make an enormous game of twister.Youll get to see a few sights too.

karaoke nights, cheap drinks all night, fun and welcoming crowd, good music but not too loud, friendly and help full staff, clean smoking area, reliable taxi numbers, theme nights and most importantly me!!!!

you could hire me to work there, the bar i work in at the weekends is always busy, last week we held a schhol disco party, it was packed, next month we having a pimp and whore night, should be a laugh,

hold a kareoke night once a week, that always gets people in, have a cocktail night, advertise all different cocktails and on one n9ight of the week make them cheaper, just all different things

A pool table. Gamble machine and the 20p things for sweets

Its not about the drink, its about the people who come into drink.
Get a loyal and regular crowd in and they will do the word of mouth stuff.
Is there a large employer near buy? You might want to try to tap into their quick after work drink market.
but still I say its about the people and the atmosphere they generate.

The usual method the industry employs is to get women in by selling stuff they like cheap then the beer monsters eventually turn up as well.

If you have a dance floor then you are set and ready
