Vino Santo?!

Question:

Vino Santo?

When i was in Italy i purchased a bottle of vino santo. I don't know how vague that is because i do not remember what the bottle looked like or if it was a particular "maker" It was stolen by someone i thought was a friend and i never got it back. how can i find that same wine again. I tasted it in Italy and i loved it. It was very potent in the sense that one glass was enough for the night. more like a clear but thick liquor rather than wine.

Answers:
I love Vino Santo too. It is a very rich, sweet, complex and intense wine. Made with air dried Nosiola grapes to concentrate the flavours, the grapes are pressed during the Holy Week, the week that precedes Easter Sunday, hence the name - Vino SANTO. The grapes are dried from the time of harvest in Oct until April - 7 months. I was a Wine Judge in the Concorso Enologico Internazionale Vinitaly 2006 (world's largest wine competition in Verona, Italy). Vino Santo is great with almond Biscotti. I also adore Recioto, Passito and Amarone wines which are made in a similar way. There are some fabulous Recioto wines from Trentino.....Mama mia!

Considering that Recioto is a particular type of amarone made in a little area called Valpolicella in the north of Italy near Verona, while Vin Santo is made in the central-southern part of Tuscany with two completely different kind of grapes:
Vin Santo comes, as pinot from moscato's family of grapes that are white, instead of Amarone or Recioto, Lambrusco or Chianti that are red wines so completely different.
My suggestion is to try to see on the websites of wine producers in the Siena area because they actually ship it all round the world if you don't specify where you are I can't help!

Go to any wineshop and ask for a Vin Santo they will almost certainly have several options to choose from. Purchase the one that they reccommend and enjoy!
