How to know if you drink too much?!

Question: I recently graduated from college, so needless to say, I've been in "party mode" for the past 4 years or so. Now I am on my own, and I still find myself drinking almost every night. I don't feel that I HAVE to drink and its not that I can't go without it, its just that I get bored, so I figure, hey, why not have a few drinks? I don't drink every night, and I have no problem not drinking, its just that I don't know how much alcohol the normal person (i.e. not a college student) drinks on a regular basis. Part of me feels that I drink too much, but then the other part of me says "hey, its not affecting your life, so there is no problem." I am just trying to find a real answer to this question of how much is drinking too much?

The world would be a little more easy to deal with if there was an easy answer to your question.

Some people's body chemistry can handle a few drinks several times a week, and never suffer ill effects.

I once knew a 95 year old alcoholic that would strictly regulate her consumption to 2 drinks a day, only starting after 5:00pm. Alcoholic? yes. Ill effects? Not really, other than being a slave to that 5:00 cocktail hour.

Other people would have a hard time recovering from that physically, unless they abstained altogether for several days.

Try this as a test. Don't drink anything for 2 weeks. If after that, you want a drink, limit the number of drinks you consume in a day, make sure you give yourself 2 days to recover.

The body degrades over time, and you are young, so you may not know the damage being done yet.

just, don't drink. and drinking alone is no fun. at least call some friends over.
i think i'd be worried if i had a few drinks alone.

If you are wondering about it...it is most likely time to hang up the beer cans and shot glasses for a while. Then you'll see. It might be just a habit because you're bored or you might be an functioning alcoholic. Stopping drinking for a month isn't going to kill you but not stopping might eventually so why not see. Quit for a while. Maybe then you'll develop a new perspective on yourself.

Well, I think if you're questioning yourself if you drink too much, then subconsciously I think you know that you do. So, one way to know if you're drinking too much is naturally, you're weight. Granted, as we get older our metabolism slows down and there can be other factors to gaining weight. But, it definitely won't help keeping those jeans fit especially since alcohol is loaded with empty calories. A single bottle of beer has 590 calories in it, double that and you're more than half way to your daily calorie intake and you haven't even had breakfast, lunch or dinner yet.

So, I would suggest to try and cut back your alcohol to one glass of wine or a bottle of beer once a week and see the difference it might make in your life. I'm sure you can do that especially since you said that you have no problem not drinking. :)

Good luck!

If you feel that you drink too much, you probably do.

This isn't an easy question to answer and you need to figure out where alcohol fits into your life as an adult.

I personally drink socially about 1-3 times a month and I know my limit. I also enjoy, on occasion, microbrew beers or good wines with a meal but I consider water my default beverage.

You can enjoy it in moderation without feeling wicked for drinking or pious from abstaining. Enjoy the flavors and craftsmanship of fine beers, wines, and spirits and don't drink just to get drunk.

If you have to ask, then you probably already know the answer. Yes, you drink too much. Drinking on a daily basis is very bad for your health. Go and find some activities that keep you busy so you aren't "bored' and you don't just drink every night.

Two drinks a night at the most. More than that or binge rinking is too much

I can tell that I've had to much to drink when I go to the mensroom, unzip, grab hold of my thumb and pee in my pants.
Good indicator.

Google it, theres a way to know, its by how you react after you keep drinking and drinking. Based on that reaction like if you feel like you cant stand in place and cant talk right ..its a clue that you've drank too much. If you cant remember last night the day after too.
